Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
