The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
